The Upper East Side Is Slumming It Thanks to the Second Avenue Subway

The Upper East Side is home to some of New York’s most expensive real estate, and with the building of the Second Avenue Subway well underway, it’s no surprise there have been complaints. We’ve always thought it was unfounded whining, but the MTA subway expansion project has left the stretch from 66th to 74th Streets looking like a virtual shanty town, with closed shops, closed lanes, and scattered hardware hidden behind fences draped in cloth. “Improving non-stop,” reads the transit agency’s signage. I wonder if the locals would agree. See what it looks like to live next to a perpetual construction site in the gallery above. (Photos: Aymann Ismail/ANIMALNewYork)
