Straphangers Campaign: 7 Train the Best, 2 Train the Worst

The Straphangers Campaign released its annual “State of the Subway” ranking today and the 7 train was deemed the best line overall:

The 7 ranked highest because it tied for best in the system on frequency of service — and also performed above average on three measures: delays caused by mechanical breakdowns; seat availability at the most crowded point during rush hour; and subway car cleanliness. The line did not get a higher rating because it performed below average on regularity of service and subway car announcements.

According to the transit advocacy group, the last time the 7 won the honorable distinction was in 2010 and overall, has received top honors seven times since the inception of the survey in 1997. The 2 train on the other hand, was rated the worst and considering its competition, the G, that’s pretty sad:

The 2 performed below average on three measures: regularity of service; delays caused by mechanical breakdowns; and seat availability during rush hour. The line did not get a lower rating as it tied for best in the system on subway car announcements and performed near average on subway car cleanliness and amount of scheduled service.

Overall, there was an increase in the subway car breakdown rate, but the trains were cleaner by 2 percent and people actually said that subway announcements have gotten a tad more understandable. Other notables: The C was the most on time and along with the J/Z, the cleanest, the R was the best train for scoring a seat and presumably the G was most likely the train people had to run after the most.
