Poll: New York ♥’s Weed

May 27, 2014 | Bucky Turco

According to a Quinnipiac poll released on Friday, New York State voters overwhelmingly support medical weed, with a whopping 83 percent of presumably cool people in favor and 15 percent of likely curmudgeons opposed. A large majority, 62 – 34 percent, also approves of having dispensaries in their towns to provide medicinal cannabis, which is good news for those gauging the potential NIMBY backlash.

On the issue of legalizing small amounts of recreational chronic, the margins are much slimmer, 51 – 44 percent, but still a majority. Not surprisingly, age was a huge factor, with young people wanting legalization more than their older counterparts, many of whom are still recovering from decades of Reefer Madness-style government propaganda. That may help explain the 15 percent of respondents who actually think that weed is more dangerous alcohol.
