The Met Opera Has Been a Little Vandalized

June 26, 2014 | Marina Galperina

Several paintings and sculptures inside the Metropolitan Opera house at Lincoln Center have been spray-painted with obscenities, the NYPD says, suspecting an inside job motivated by labor disputes.

“There was little or no permanent damage,” said a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Opera stated. “The New York City Police department is investigating.” Cops have also stated that the vandalism doesn’t appear to be biased in nature” and a witness described the graffiti as consisting “largely of vulgarities.”

“I don’t see it being related to the labor dispute,” said Alan S. Gordon, the executive director of the American Guild of Musical Artists and a union representative engaged in contract negotiations with the Met, after seeing the graffiti in question. “Nobody’s that crazy.” (Photo: @niallkennedy)
