Banksy’s “Grumpy” Door Was Much Cheaper a Few Months Ago

March 7, 2014 | Andy Cush

A box truck door emblazoned with the phrase “The grumpier you are, the more assholes you meet,” from Banksy’s monthlong Better Out Than In NYC residency is selling for $400,000 at SCOPE. First reported by Brooklyn Street Art, we reached out to ArtNowNY, the gallery representing the seller, for more details.

Joseph Gross, the owner of the gallery, said his client bought the door directly from Israel, the original owner of the truck, who hasn’t given his last name to the press. The client prefers to remain anonymous, but according to Gross, he is “a high-profile individual here in New York City.” It’s likely that the mysterious seller bought the work for close to the $100,000 price we reported back in October.

Given the recent struggles Stephan Keszler has seen in his attempts to sell Banksy’s street works unauthorized, $400,000 could be a tough sell, but Gross is confident, and said he has potential buyers flying in from California and Israel. “Right now, I have about a half a dozen people who are very serious,” he said.
