Commemorate Sandy by Paying to Tour Rockaways Lifeguard Stands

September 12, 2013 | Andy Cush

A visit to the luxury offers website Gilt City turns up deals for a spa in midtown, tickets to a “culinary conference,” pilates classes, and… a guided tour of the Rockaways’ fancy new post-Sandy lifeguard stands. The tour, part of a monthlong architecture celebration called Archtober, the will take place on October 29, which is, yes, the one-year anniversary of the hurricane.

The multimillion dollar lifeguard and comfort station project was controversial–DNAinfo reported the modular buildings were already in deteriorating condition last month, and some residents feel the project was completed without enough input from locals.

State Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, who represents the area, is vowing to fight the tours. “They’re making a profit on a project that was forced down the community’s throat, disguised as recovery,” he said. “It’s disgusting. It’s just another slap in the face to a community that has struggled to recover.”
