22-Year-Old Sculptor to Do Residency at the Park Avenue Armory

April 23, 2013 | Kyle Chayka

Last week the Park Avenue Armory announced their selection of artists to participate in a residency within their monstrous Upper East Side complex. These residencies were established sometime in 2010 and include space for the research and creation of new works by each respective artist.

Artists selected include singer-songwriter Somi, performance artist Okwui Okpokwasili, choreographers Driscoll and Ralph Lemon among others, but most notably young visual artist and curator of Appendix Project Space in Portland, Oregon Alex Mackin Dolan.

As part of the Armory’s upcoming “Under Construction” series, the resident artists will be presenting works in development throughout their residency. Visual Alex Dolan plans to begin working on a new series of sculptures, allowing for the historic space of the Armory to continually inform the production and life of the work. Dolan was selected for the residency in partnership with 89plus, an ongoing research project conducted by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets, which examines the generation of artists born in or after 1989.

And yes, he’s “young.”
