Eric Kelly of the Church Street Boxing Gym has a unique approach to training his clients–or as he calls them, “miscreants.” To help them perfect their boxing technique, Eric subjects them to a barrage of verbal abuse, insults, and public degradation.
Why? Because it makes them tougher. That’s why.

Getting a pool stick to the eye makes you cranky.
The guy is a jerk and his analogy of "I don't go to you office and try to do your job" is faulty.
He is an instructor and people go there to learn. A more accurate analogy would be if he goes to a finance class, does not have any background on it, and the professor calls him a retard for not knowing how to interpret a financial report. The professor would be a jerk. This guy is a jerk and a bully if I may say so.
The comparison of teaching finance reporting to teaching a martial art is the bad analogy here. Obviously, this instructor prescribes to the-break-down-to-build-up approach (used by the military). You wouldn't need to break down someone who wanted to learn financial reporting…for reasons I think are obvious. And I think something else to consider is…pussies shouldn't take boxing classes.
zamboni, you are a fag
It's not a class, it's practice. Huge difference. These guys obviously aren't actually trying to box, if somebody came there and actually listened to his advice, they would learn and not get mocked.
He's basically just coaching them as if they were fighters rather than pretenders, if you walk into a gym when real fighters are training and don't have your shit together, this is what happens. He is just being treating them like real fighters, which is what they want. Obviously works for all involved.
I doubt that he is following a "break-down-to-build-up approach." It's more likely that these pasty white pathetic execuses for men annoy him and he resents and is probably embarassed by being forced to associate with them in order to be able to rub two nickels together. I'm guessing if he has any white wall street bitches to teach he'll be more gentle with them (at least initially).
I worked out at this gym for years. This guy is probably the nicest, funniest employee at Church Street. Always joking, having a good time. Yeah he talks some shit. It’s boxing; you should go there expecting that, wanting that.
He is actually a really cool dude in real life and a good coach
Oh man, I'll pay this dude $10 to step in the ring with a wall street piece of shit?
If one doesn't appreciate the way this man trains find a new trainer there are plenty out there, what might work for me might not work for you and vice versa
Was “this guy is a jerk and a bully” intentional or unintentional humor?
This is one of the funniest guys I've ever heard. I would love to have him train me. I would also love to have beer with him after. He probably wouldn't want to hang with a cracker like me, but I think it would be fun. Bummer about his eye.
This guy is amazing. I would welcome the opportunity to take boxing lessons from him. Please, someone make a documentary on him.
PS – Zamboni, you don't get it.
This video is hilarious and awesome, can you tell me the title of the catchy music track playing in the background? Thanks
Whats the song in this video?¿???¿???
No possible way would I last more than 2 minutes learning from him because I'm a wuss but I think for people who can handle it, he probably motivates them way more than a more "you're doing great!" type trainer would.
The song is "Candy" by Cameo.
Part of learning how to fight is pulling the intensity and rage from your system. A lot of these guys have spent their whole life being patient, controlled people who avoid conflict and suppress their anger. This dude brings it out of them in a way that lets them know that it's not personal, and then instructs them how to channel that emotion into achieving their goal of learning how to fight correctly.
The weight of your boxing gloves really should be selected dependent on the kind of boxing strategy you are heading to use.
Similarly, Shoto Kan, Tai Chi Chwan, Ju Jistu, and
many other fighting styles prevail in different countries like Philippines,
Indonesia, India, Cambodia, and other regions. Pepper spray is also provided for intense situations where close combat with criminals is expected.
