Our favorite feathered friends occupying New York City’s parks and lakes aren’t too happy. Because they’re dead. It’s June, which means it’s time for the government’s annual goose slaughter.
According to a New York Times article, “goose collectors from the federal Department of Agriculture have corralled and hauled away 255 geese at 12 parks, with a goal of capturing 400 geese at 14 parks.” Bloomberg began the annual goose hunt in 2009 after a US Airways jet collided with a flock of geese.
Members of Goose Watch NYC were out in full force the other day protesting Bloomberg’s lethal treatment against NYC’s feathered friends. According to their website, “CANADA GEESE are beautiful, emotionally intelligent birds who mate for life, fiercely protect their eggs and young, and display loyalty for other members of their flock.”
Each goose yields one pound of meat, apparently. It has yet to be seen whether Brooklyn’s DIY bow-and-arrow hunter-gatherers will capitalize on the local fare.
