The New York City Miss Subways campaign, which ran from 1941 to 1976, featured a poster of a woman in many subway cars–women who were celebrated for their character, professional achievements, and good looks. And in the years since the program ended, a group of former Miss Subways has been informally gathering at the behest of Ellen Hart, owner of Ellen’s Stardust Diner and Miss Subways 1959.

This week, ANIMAL caught up with a few of the women, who reunited at the eatery to celebrate the release of a new book of Miss Subways portraits, and raise funds to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
