Yesterday, the city marked the 125th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge with a massive fireworks display. Some of the straphangers on the Q train must have been pleasantly surprised when going over the Manhattan Bridge, especially when the conductor stopped the train so everyone can watch, according to this account. The bridge officially opened on May 24, 1883 back when Brooklyn was considered an independent city with its own mayor, it was until 1898 that it became part of NYC. We thought you should know that.
